Guest Post: Home Design Adventures

Hi, y’all! I’m so excited to be guest blogging while Julia goes and gets herself hitched to the man of her dreams. While I don’t have much to add by way of fashion sense (hence why I subscribe to Tartan & Sequins in the first place!), I thought it might be fun to share a little about my adventures in designing a home. That’s right: I’m helping pick out all of the finishes for my family’s new home in Atlanta, GA. For those who know me, this is a scary but true fact.

Quick background: at the beginning of the summer, my husband, 1 year old son and I relocated from San Francisco, CA to my hometown, Atlanta, GA. In many respects, it was a tough move: saying goodbye to the glorious city by the bay and our former lives was no easy feat. But a huge reason behind the move (other than the obvious: family) was to capitalize on the housing market. We were lucky enough to own a condo in SF and with the recent housing boom we were even luckier to sell it at the right time.

After two months, we found our dream home: perfect location, open floor plan, master bedroom with his and her closets (YES!) and huge bathroom, screened in porch over looking back yard and a two car garage that we get to call our own. The one catch is, the house is still under construction. Atlanta is experiencing it’s own real estate boom and contractors are scooping up older houses and redoing them left and right. We are now tasked with working with the builder and their designer to custom select all the finishes including everything from faucets and door handles, to countertops, cabinets and tile.

With no previous experience in building, we were introduced to an AMAZING website called houzz.com. We created several inspiration boards primarily to hone in on the style and feel we wanted to create in our home. It’s no surprise that “California Casual” kept reappearing, but with the help of these pictures we were able to get to work selecting bathroom tile with our designer.

Loving the casual vibe with white cabinets and a butcher block island.

Two-toned kitchen cabinets and/or cabinets are all the rage.

We are opting for a drop in tub instead of the very popular soaking tub.
Mama needs a ledge for her glass of wine!

The porch will have a fire place (swoon!)

  1. It was very useful for me. Keep sharing such ideas in the future as well. This was actually what I was looking for and I am glad to.

  2. Hi! You shared a beautiful post here. No matter when it is posted, it is still relevant. The woodwork, wood furniture, and wooden flooring are still in trend. The only concern when it comes to furniture is the quality of wood. If wood is of good quality then it becomes so easy to maintain the furniture. if termite is there and one doesn't take any action then it may do big damage to not only all furniture items but also may damage your walls. So yes quality matters a lot. I am looking for some trendy furniture for my newly bought house. For Office Furniture In Melbourne at least I got a good store to buy. Custom-made furniture will also be a good option for any house and I am going to give it a try. Thanks for sharing.
