Chic Hair On-The-Go

Allison's doppelganger, Rachel McAdams, running late. Via

When my friend Julie messaged me asking for T&S to write a post on quick and easy hairstyles, I'll admit my first thought was - crap, I want to know about that too! In trying to be healthy or whatever, I've been waking up even earlier than before to squeeze in a workout before work. Juggling a workout, blogging, packing a lunch and getting ready is no easy feat. Trying to actually look cute on top of that? Forgeddaboutit. I'm sure you can all relate to the feeling. That is, unless you're Rachel McAdams who looks amazing even when running late.

So I took the challenge head on and did some research. Below are a variety of cute and relatively easy hairstyles compiled from my own experiences and  research :)

The SOCKBUN
The sockbun is a freaking LIFESAVER. Last week, I took a 7am pilates class. I got back to my apartment around 8am and had to leave for work by 8:40am. Needless to say, I didn't have time for the full routine. You know what I did have time for though? The sockbun! I threw my hair up in that bad boy, added a classic black headband and WHAM, I was out the door on time. For a tutorial on this genius invention, watch this video.

Curls via the Curling Wand
Things I'm not interested in: spending 30 minutes curling my hair in the morning. Things I am interested in: spending 30 minutes curling my hair, have it hold all day and then rocking the looser curls the next day. But how can it be? Ladies, let me introduce you to the magic of the curling wand.

The curling wand is magical because the thing gets so darn hot, your curls will actually hold all day and even the next day. I know not everyone can skip hair wash days, but if you can, I HIGHLY recommend this approach. Check out days 1 and 2 of my curls:

Here is the curling wand I own (spoiler alert, its just $40) and a helpful tutorial from Rachel of Pink Peonies. After curling, just apply hairspray (I use Elnett) and you're ready to go!

French Twist
The French Twist is the look of elderly librarians no more!

Tease the crown of your head or use a bump-it (my secret weapon) to get some volume. Pull your hair into a low pony with your hands and twist it upwards. Tuck any extra hair back into the twist and secure with bobby pins and a buttload of Elnett. You're good to go there or top with a headband for an Audrey moment. Click here for a professional tutorial that is much more legit than my description haha.

Chic Ponytail
I would argue that not all ponytails are created equal. The pony I wear to go for a run is a far cry from the one I wear to work. The chic pony can either be all slicked back with a flat or curling iron run through the ends to give it a flip or you can go with the more voluminous look teased crown pony. Here are what the two versions looks like (compliments of my pals Jessica and Bar):

The Braided Bun
I rocked this look last week and got so many compliments! Its so easy and perfect for 2nd day hair. You simply part your hair in the middle, take the front portions of either side and braided them back. I didn't even french braid those suckers (I know, such a rebel). I secured them underneath my hair with two bobby pins each. I threw the rest of my hair in a messy bun and called it a day. Here's proof that it actually looked awesome.

So that's what I've got for chic hairstyles on-the-go. Does anyone have any other suggestions?! We'd all love to know!!

  3. So going to try that last braided look tomorrow! :)

And is it just me or does Elnett totally smell like a grandma-ish perfume? I hardly ever use it b/c the smell drives me nuts!

  4. Your french twist is so fabulous! I've been trying to learn that style for years (and master the bumpit... not going so well.)

  5. These are great. My hair is similar (in length) to Allison's though so she could do a follow up post with some styles she has been trying?

  6. J, I think you just have a better head shape than I. Nothing works on my head. :(
