Cinco de Mayo Drinks

Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner and it's time to get planning for the festivities. The good folks at Sauza sent me some tequila so this past weekend I was experimenting with some cocktails to serve on Cinco de Mayo. My husband usually hates being involved with anything related to the blog, but he was not complaining when he got to taste test all of my experiments. Here are two Sauza tequila cocktails that would be perfect for Cinco de Mayo.

Grapefruit Jalapeño Margarita Recipe

4 Shots
Sauza® Blue Silver 100% Agave Tequila
1/2 Jalapeño, sliced
2 Grapefruits, juiced
2 Limes, juiced
1 Tsp Agave (optional)

Salt, Sugar and Cayenne for the rim

  1. Thinly slice up 1/2 of a raw jalapeño and add it to a jar containing 4 shots of tequila. Let sit 1-24 hours. NOTE: The longer you let it infuse, the spicier it will get so be careful!
  2. After the tequila is infused, strain it or remove the jalapeños.
  3. Add to a cocktail shaker the following:
    1. 2 parts tequila
    2. 2 parts grapefruit juice
    3. 1 part lime juice
    4. Splash of agave (if desired).
  4. Do a quick stir and taste. If you want it sweeter, add more agave.
  5. Add one ice cube and shake vigorously.
  6. Rim the glasses with sugar, salt and cayenne.
  7. Add ice, margarita and ENJOY!

Spicy Senorita

4 Shots Sauza® Blue Silver 100% Agave Tequila
1 Beer (I used Corona Light)
2 Limes, juiced
A dash of hot sauce
Salt, Sugar and Cayenne for the rim

  1. Rim the glasses with sugar, salt and cayenne.
  2. Add ice and all ingredients to glasses and stir.
  3. Enjoy - yes, it's that simple!

Mother's Day Gift Guide - Under $100

Sferra Throw

And just like that, it's almost Mother's Day (May 10th). I'm sure most mothers would be happy with a day spent together with their family, but as locations and schedules don't always allow that, a gift is always a nice substitute. I am not a mother myself but knowing what my mom might like, plus what some of my other friends who are moms would like, I put together the following gift guide. As an added bonus, all of the items (except one that is $105), are under $100.

Cold Shoulder

A couple of weeks ago, I went a little wild online shopping. When the items started trickling in through the mail, I realized that I was super into one trend: off-the-shoulder. Like everything I ordered was off-the-shoulder. After trying on all of the pieces though, I only kept a few things, of which this top was one. I like that it's in my safety zone (black) but has the fun, flirty sleeve. I have to give credit where credit is due and say I first spotted this top on the super stylish Emily.

When it came to styling the top, I tried it on with several pairs of jeans but nothing was looking right. That's when I had the idea to pair it with flared jeans. Given that flared jeans only recently came back in style, I didn't have anything new so I had to go back into the archives. I say archives because, well, these jeans are from high school. I didn't get rid of them because they were my first designer jeans (I was sentimental) and I'm a hoarder but I'm so glad I held onto them!

ASOS Top, Lisi Lerch Tassel Necklace, Jeans from High School (great options here), Calvin Klein Heels (old, similar here), Gigi New York Clutch, Sea Elise Bracelet

Blue and White

I am always on the look out for a good maxi dress. For me, a good maxi dress is one that is flattering, but forgiving, and comfortable but glamorous. Given that wishlist, the moment I saw this dress, I knew I had to have it. I ordered it awhile ago and this beautiful day in Sonoma was the perfect day for it's grand debut.

FAITHFULL THE BRAND Maxi Dress (I am wearing a size S), Gap Jean Jacket (old), Jennifer Lee Miller Earrings (sold out, really cute ones under $100 here), House of Harlow Bracelet via Rocksbox (use code tartanandsequinsxoxo for your first month free)

Girl Crush of the Week: Megan Stokes of Holy City Chic

You guys, I am beyond excited to share with you today's Girl Crush because I have been crushing on her for YEARS! She's a total Southern Belle and I always turn to her blog for beauty and style advice. She has really great taste and I trust her implicitly. The guru I am referring to is the one and only Megan Stokes of the blog HOLY CITY CHIC of course. Please join me in getting to know her as today's Girl Crush of the Week.

Style icons? I love Olivia Palermo's feminine (but not too girly) style. Also love Eleanor Strauss, Amber Fillerup, Kate Hudson, and may I reminisce just a bit? Cher Horowitz from Clueless. I cringe looking back at her outfits now, but I've got to include her because once upon a time, she struck a love of fashion in my 7-year old heart.

Favorite style trend of the moment? Metallic sandals and the nod to bohemian style

Favorite book? I recently finished Make it Happen by Lara Casey and it was fantastic. I read it in two days.

Favorite perfume? I love perfume. Chanel Coco Mademoiselle has been my favorite scent since I was a freshman in college, but I do love Chanel Coco Noir for fall & winter. I recently fell in love with Miss Dior, but only the eau de toilette version. Tom Ford's Black Orchid is my favorite seductive scent. I love Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt, too! It's a great, light scent for warm days.

Interior design philosophy? I love mixing older furniture with new, contemporary accessories and vice versa. So for example, I have an antique desk, but I paired it with a ghost chair and a snake skin tray. Not only do I love this combination of new & old, but it also makes decorating a fun challenge and often less expensive since most old pieces we own came from thrift stores! I'm inspired by the South Carolina coast and our marshlands, so I always tend to decorate with neutrals, lots of wood tones, and pops of green, gold, and black.

Your go-to shopping destinations? I shop online 99% of the time. I frequent Nordstrom, Joss & Main, Shopbop, and Sephora websites pretty often. As for local shops, I love Hampden Clothing and Mosaic, so be sure to stop by if you're ever in the Charleston area (although they both have online stores, too)!

Must-have beauty product? I don't know where to start because I am a total beauty junkie. The Skinmedica Glypro Antioxidant Serum has made a huge difference in my skin. It's expensive, but worth it because a little goes a long way and it helps with fine lines, skin discoloration, and balancing facial hydration. One of my favorite hobbies is testing out concealers (You think I'm joking!) and I've found a little gem in the Maybelline Master Conceal. For me, the light shade conceals the dark circles I always have, brightens my face, and doesn't crease.

Secret addiction? I watch beauty/lifestyle videos on YouTube It's what I do when I get ready in the mornings and get ready for bed at night. My favorite channels are Lisa Eldridge, Rachel Talbott, Ingrid Nilsen, and HRH Collection.

Motto/quote to live by? You'll never know unless you try.

Favorite drink? I'm obsessed with the Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher at Starbucks. I get it in the trenta size and ask them to go easy on the ice (So that more of the drink will fit in the cup!).

Favorite meal to prepare? Chicken Enchiladas is my go-to because it's super easy and I know it's always going to taste the same, unlike many of my experimental recipes!

Favorite piece of jewelry? Well that's easy. My engagement ring and wedding band. Although I do love a good chunky fashion ring and I'm obsessed with bracelets.

Best way to unwind? Taking a bath with a good candle and warm tea or a glass of wine.

Favorite workout? I don't have a favorite... I like to mix up my workouts so I don't get bored. I love barre, weights, boxing, and walking outside.
Favorite fitness apparel brand/item? Lululemon

Transformative Trench

Sometimes I see a piece of clothing and I imagine how it will change my look. I obsessively think about how this one piece will completely transform my style and make me so much cooler, hipper, more elegant, etc... you get the idea. I know it's silly and fleeting but I suppose that's why I'm a fashion blogger right?

The most recent piece of clothing that I think will transform my life is the sleeveless trench. After seeing the above photo of Helena from Brooklyn Blonde, I became obsessed with finding myself one just like the one she's rocking. I immediately went on the hunt and here are some fabulous sleeveless trenches that I'm considering and better yet, they're all under $150.

Spring Dresses

Tularosa Slip Dress

Even though I'm wearing my wool coat this week in San Francisco, I am dreaming of warm Spring days. When it starts getting warm here, all I want to do is wear Spring dresses! Nothing super fancy, just the type of dresses you can pop on for work, to go shopping, to go to brunch- you get the idea. However, because it so rarely gets warm here in SF, I haven't really amassed a huge Spring/Summer dress collection. However, thanks to the wonder of the internet, that should change soon. Here are some of my favorite casual Spring dresses out there right now:

Casual Camel

After a few nice weeks of Spring, San Francisco has sadly retreated back into Winter. Luckily I have this camel coat, purchased last fall, which works perfectly for such unfortunate occasions. The coat keeps me cozy and chic is also incredibly versatile as it pairs just as well with dressier work clothes as it does with sneakers and a tee. Here I am on one of my more casual days (aka 90% of the time).

Club Monaco Camel Coat (old, option under $200 here), Feel The Piece Tank, Paige Jeans, Jack Purcell Sneakers,
Prada Sunglasses, Banana Republic Bracelet, Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella

Girl Crush of the Week: Emily Helm of Life with Emily

What can I say about today's Girl Crush of the Week other than her outfits always make me smile. That may seem like a weird thing to say, but her use of color, pattern and texture just makes me happy. I mean, look at the dress above. Is it not TO DIE FOR?! The fabulous lady I'm referring to is none other than Emily Helm of the life + style blog Life with Emily. Please join me in getting to know her a little more as today's Girl Crush of the Week.

Style icons? I look a lot to celebrities like Olivia Palermo, Reese Witherspoon, and Lauren Conrad for style inspiration because I love their effortless chic looks. I also look to my favorite bloggers like Julia from Gal Meets Glam for style ideas. I get a lot of inspiration from the blogging world and will often times recreate a look with my own spin on it (and often at a much more affordable price!)

Favorite style trend of the moment?
I have really been drawn to neutral tones lately. Neutrals are like a blank canvas and have the ability to be styled so many ways with different accessories. Plus I really like that with neutrals you can mix and match to create a lot of different outfits, too!

Favorite book?
I am an undercover book nerd! I read a few books a month. As for my favorite, I would have to say Gone Girl. It was one of those books that totally threw me for a loop and kept me turning page after page. But I also love anything by Jodi Picoult and Jane Green.

Favorite perfume? My signature scent is Versace Bright Crystal, it is so fresh smelling.

Interior design philosophy?
Currently I am a girl on a budget, so I try to work with what I’ve got! I love the mix of classic and modern though. And when it’s time to redecorate I will totally be going with that type of theme throughout my home.

Your go-to shopping destinations? Nordstrom is always a favorite because they carry my favorite brands and their customer service is wonderful. I also love Revolve Clothing, Shopbop, and ASOS for on-trend items!

Must-have beauty product? Mascara. Even if I don’t wear anything else, I WILL have on mascara. It makes me look a little more awake, even if I’m really tired! My favorite go-to mascaras are bareMinerals Lash Domination, Too Faced Better Than Sex, and Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes

Secret addiction? Hmmm… Friends on Netflix is my not-so-secret addiction. I will binge watch that show like no other! But an addiction that people may not know….Goldfish. I really, really love Goldfish (haha) and have to almost force myself to not eat them every day. Oops!

Motto/quote to live by?
“Live in the Moment” I have a really hard time wanting to plan ahead or think back on what I could have changed in the past and it really throws me off. So thinking about this quote helps me focus on the present and truly enjoying this specific moment that I’m living in.

Favorite drink? Non-alcoholic: Venti Skinny Vanilla Latte from Starbucks…I love my caffeine.
Alcoholic: Craft Beer… I am a bit of a beer snob and I really enjoy trying different beers. One of my favorite cities is Asheville because they have so many amazing breweries and craft beer!

Favorite meal to prepare?
Confession: I am really terrible at cooking. I have four or five dishes that I can prepare but that’s about it! I will say, breakfast food is my favorite to cook!

Favorite piece of jewelry?
Anything Kendra Scott…it’s my obsession

Best way to unwind?
Taking a bath and reading a book.
Favorite workout? I am a Pure Barre addict. I love the atmosphere, the technique, and all of the girls at the studio.

Favorite fitness apparel brand/item?
I really like Gap’s fitness apparel. The price point is great and it fits me so well!
