Leopard Flats

In a devastating turn of events, my leopard flats, pictured above, have died. Given how long I've had them and how much I wear them, it was only a matter of time but still, it was a sad day when I realized they needed to go to the big shoe store in the sky. So the hunt begins for a new pair. Here are my frontrunners.

Cole Haan - $228
Vince Camuto - $98

Circus by Sam Edelman - $50

I am kind of digging the Vince Camuto ones with the obnoxious bow the most! I've never owned a pair of VC shoes though- have any of you? Are they comfortable and of good quality?

Quilted Denim

You know me, totes obsessed with all things moto this fall/winter. It should come as no surprise to you that I could not pass up these quilted moto jeans when I spotted them at Zara (similar pair here). I actually went to two different stores to find them because the original pair had a stain on them. Let me tell you, that is way more work than this online shopper usually exerts but I just had to have them.

I'll be rocking these suckers all fall/winter with slouchy tops like this one, also from Zara.

Product Review: WEI Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask

The old performance fleece + headband + face mask combo.
This is a good look, no?

I have discovered the most amazing face mask that I just have to share with you all. It's a new find thanks to Birchbox. While not naturally any sort of beauty fiend, I have discovered SEVERAL great products from Birchbox (read the reviews here, here and here) that I now cannot live without.

The latest product I am obsessed with is the WEI Golden Root Purifying Mud MaskUnlike some other masks I've tried, this WEI mask is super gentle and easy. It's easy to apply, pleasant-smelling and, most importantly, makes your skin feel like a dream the next day. It also comes with this sassy brush to apply the mask with which makes me feel very high-end.

If you're looking for a new face mask to try, check out the WEI Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask!

Workout Routine

As I'm sure you all have noticed, over the past nine months, I have shed some weight. Many of you have asked how I did it, so I thought I would share my workout plan with you all. A huge part of it has been working out and probably an even greater part has been changing the way I ate. If you all are interesting in the eating portion, LMK in the comments section and I'll write a post on that too :)

So, losing weight. You see, over the past several years, I slowly acquired the "love flub" - you know, the weight you gain once you start dating someone as a result of wine and cheese nights and dinners out. Slowly but surely I started feeling less and less comfortable in my clothes and looking less like myself when I looked in the mirror. With my wedding coming down the pike, I knew I was really going to kick myself in the pants if I looked back at my wedding photos with dismay. So I embarked on a journey.

I started working out with some serious effort. In the past, I had worked with a trainer when I needed to buckle down, but this time I wanted to do things on my own. I was a competitive swimmer all the way through college so I knew I had it in me, I just had to ease into it. I wanted to make sure I was changing things up to keep myself interested but not being so loosey-goosy that I gave myself too much leeway to slack off. I signed up for a local gym with my husband (because we all work out more when someone is doing it with us) and bought a monthly package at a pilates studio. It was time to get serious.

Here is the plan that I used to get fit and what I am still implementing. Of course, everyone has their own path to getting fit so what worked for me may not be an exact fit for you. This is just to share what worked for me :)

I do two mat pilates classes a week as strength training. I have knee, shoulder and lower back injuries from swimming so it's great to find an exercise routine based in rehab. Because the studio is a little under a mile from my house, I run to and from class to get some cardio. Also, to change things up within pilates, I rotate through the instructors at the studio.

I must start by saying that not all spin classes are created equal. Some are focused on strength-training, others simulate real life cycling and others are pure cardio. What I do is pure cardio. I do one to two cardio spin classes a week. I have the best teacher ever who plays house music (check out all of his mixes here) and makes it actually fun to workout for 45 minutes (no seriously). Let me tell you, at the end of class I am always in a great mood and soaking wet with sweat.

Aside from running two and from pilates, I try to go on a run once a week also. If the weather is nice, I'll run outside or if not, I'll run on a treadmill at my gym. It's a great cardio workout and if you focus on your core, you can get some pretty nice abs out of it too. Right now I only run about 4-5 miles. It's hard running in this city though- there is only so much flat land!!

In addition to my regular pilates/spinning/running routine, I try to mix in a conditioning or TRX class from time to time. These classes are a great mix of cardio and strength training.

So what about all of you? Any workout tips?

Mixing It Up at Work: The Sassy Skirt

The Sassy Skirt
Now, I have a ton of black, navy and grey pencil skirts in my wardrobe but those just aren't cutting it anymore. I want (and need) something with a little more personality to sass up my look. When paired with the right other pieces, the sassy skirt looks polished and chic. I love the way Wendy, Rachel, Mary and Blair have styled their sassy skirts. I love the skirts add a punch of personality to their look.

So, I've done what any sensible young lady would do and started scouring the internet for sassy skirts. I've found a ton of chic options at all price ranges and have compiled my favorites here, check them out!

Interested in other ways to mix it up at work? Check out last week's post!

New Winter Coat

You know, living in San Francisco means it's never too early to shop for a winter coat. With all of the fabulous winter coats out now and cooler temps just around the corner, I was just itching for a swanky new number. After searching long and hard I came across this peacoat from Club Monaco.

Prada Cat Eye Sunglasses, Club Monaco Peacoat, Forever 21 Leopard Sweater (similar here and here), BDG Jeans, Dorothy Perkins Booties

What I love about this Club Monaco coat is that it's classic (camel) with a twist (leather detailing). In addition, I love that the coat can either look classic or edgy depending on what it's paired with.

Mixing It Up at Work: The Slouchy Pant

Here is the thing about work clothes- they have the very high possibility of being boring. Now, when I say "work clothes" I mean business casual and above. Luckily I work in a very casual environment so I don't have to dress up that often. However, I have recently been finding myself needing to dress business casual about once a week to meet with clients and let me tell you, it's a struggle. How does one look professional and cool at the same time? Obvs, I had to scour Pinterest for the answer.

After doing some searching, I discovered three articles of clothing that I think achieve the perfect balance of profesh and cool. They are the slouchy pant, the sassy skirt and the fitted sweater. Let's talk about the slouchy pant today.

The Slouchy Pant
Because I usually have to fly to visit with clients, I need options that travel well. In my searching I came across tons of ladies, like the ones above, looking legit in slouchy, drawstring pants. Pair the pants with a blazer and a chic heel and you're golden. Here are some of the pairs I'm considering.

What do you guys think? Is the slouchy pant profesh or just cool?

Fall Entertaining

This past weekend I got to do something I haven't really been able to since before I was engaged- entertain! TC and I both love to entertain but with planning a wedding, the idea of planning anything else seemed too much. So, now that we're married (not to mention fully stocked with new housewares off our registry), its game on.

Every couple of months, one of my girlfriends hosts a "girls dinner," a potluck, girls-only type affair at their house. This month, it was my turn and I was so excited. I got to bust out my new linens, flatware, glassware and tableware for the occasion and, in the spirit of the season, added some seasonal touches.

For the seasonal touches, I wanted them to be just that, touches, and nothing cheesy. I picked up some mini pumpkins to use as place cards and a bouquet of dahlias, roses and berries for the centerpiece. Those two touches, paired with my new table wear, were the perfect nod to fall.

In terms of menu items, we started out with an Italian salad (recipe here) and then moved on to a heavenly butternut squash lasagna. For dessert, we feasted on strawberry chiffon cake and chocolate bread putting.

Yum yum yummy Italian salad.

Heavenly butternut squash lasagna.
I think I'm going to try this related recipe this week bc I cannot stop thinking about it!

I had two servings of the bread pudding- it was freaking amazing!!

Healthy Mexican Recipes

Image via

As I recently discovered, I am addicted to Mexican food. How did I discover this you ask? Welp, after being out of the country on my honeymoon, the first, second, third and fourth meals I proceeded to eat were all Mexican. TC actually had to tell me we needed to cool our jets on the Mexican for a little bit. That was a sad day.

But I digress. Mexican cuisine, while delish, isn't the most healthy of things to eat. If I wanted to continue to eat it for every meal, something was going to have to change. My mission became clear- find healthier versions of my favorite Mexican dishes. Luckily Pinterest (follow my food board here) is ripe with these recipes so today I want to share with you three of my favorite recipes.

Summer squash, zucchini, corn, asparagus, garlic, shallot and cumin. YUM!

Roasted Vegetable Tacos
Holy eff these are amazing. I modified this recipe the following ways:
  • Removed the avocado cream sauce, not necessary and a fair amount of fat/carbs
  • Added asparagus bc I had it in my fridge haha, it was a great addition
  • Used these corn tortillas from La Tortilla Factory
  • While I was cool with just veggies, my husband is a carnivore, so he whipped up a half batch of this jalapeƱo pulled chicken in our new crock pot and added that. He was in heaven.
  • Covered that sucker in Tapatio. Spicy and delicious.
The jalapeno pulled chicken just cooking away in our crock pot.

Lettuce Cup Tacos
A spin on your more traditional tacos, this recipe allows you to use your calories/carbs/points for all the goodies inside the taco instead of using them on the tortilla. I've shared the recipe here. I usually roll with faux taco meat, beans, jalapenos and cheese in mine. So so good.

Apologies for the iPhone photo- I was in a hurry to eat!

Zucchini Enchiladas
I'll admit, I was skeptical when I first saw this recipe but honestly I just really wanted enchiladas so I gave it a try. UM they are amazing. So creamy and yummy you forget you are even trying to eat healthy, which is a mission I fully support. Here is the recipe from Skinnytaste.

I hope you all give at least one of these recipes a try. They are all truly divine!

Pop of Color

H&M Blouse (similar here and here), Forever 21 Skirt (similar), Zara Heels,
Forever 21 Jacket, Banana Republic Clutch

With the weather being warm-ish here the past few weeks, I have been busting out my skirts and dresses with wild abandon. The other weekend, we headed to a party and I thought it was the perfect occasion to take my Forever 21 skirt for a spin (last seen here). I paired it with a black blouse from H&M, and my turquoise Zara heels for a pop of color. Oh and my trusty Buffy the Vampire Slayer leather jacket. Because well, it's awesome.

Moto Boot Madness

By now, you all have probably gotten a really strong sense as to what I'll be rocking all fall long- moto jackets, slouchy tees, skinny jeans and booties. You know I'm having a love affair with my Rag & Bone booties, but as I've said before, one can never have too many pairs of booties. And since I'm going for an edgier look this fall, it's time to pick myself up some moto boots.

Holy cow the internet is filled with so many options. From slight variations on style to massive variations on price, there has got to be a pair out there that will work for me. Here are some of my favorites:

Top Row: Prada - $990, Jimmy Choo - $950, Rag & Bone - $595
Bottom Row:
Frye - $298, Steve Madden Chaps - $149, Steve Madden Tiarraa - $100

Am I crazy to think the Steve Madden's may be worth a try here? I think I'm going to order the Tiarraa's despite the obnoxious name and see how they work! If they don't work out, I may go for the Rag & Bone pair. Oh who am I kidding, I will probably still by the R&B pair regardless!

Which pair do you all like best?! Any other options I should be looking at?

Madewell Must-Haves

For a long time, I didn't really get Madewell. I mean, I kind of knew what they were trying to do, but yet nothing from the brand ever appealed to me. That was, until I saw this post from Blair a couple of weeks ago. The second I saw that PARIS tee, I knew I needed to have it.

So while out shopping the other weekend, I stopped into Madewell to try it on. After a massive debacle resulting in me vowing never to set foot in a Madewell store again, I didn't end up with the PARIS tee, but I ended up with the drape pocket tee I featured here and a pair of coated moto jeans.

I am having a love affair with both these pieces. I love that I can rock them with a flat or a wedge bootie for work and then throw on a jacket and clutch to grab a drink with friends. Something tells me I'll be wearing these in heavy rotation all fall long :)

Carbon Copy: Skirts and Stripes

Hello Tartan & Sequins! My name is Lauren, from Copper + Walnut, and I am so honored J has asked me to pop over monthly and share some design inspiration with ya'll. I currently reside in Texas but hail originally from the Midwest where I had the pleasure of meeting Julia in college. Along with my interior design blog I recently launched a line of design-savvy, affordable custom furniture where everything from upholstery fabric down to the construction method has been hand-picked by moi. My hope as a designer is to expose our generation to attainable, high-end furniture and design and on the first Thursday of each month I will put together a shop-able post right here on T&S!

This is one of my all time favorite family rooms. It's fancy enough to host a dinner party but still laid back and easy to live in. The casual gray skirted sofas and fun striped rug are offset by the glam gold accessories and fun patterned pillows. For me, design is all about choosing pieces you love but making them functional for your life.

rug // horse bust // vase // sofas + pillows // cocktail table // mirror {on sale}// lamp

The Madison Sofa is shown in taupe with beige n' arrow, neutral key, gold reptile and cream chevron throw pillows. I believe the perfect way to create a unique, collected look is to mix custom pieces with retail and vintage finds. If you're looking for daily design inspiration check out my blog or you can also follow me on pinterest.

Hope you enjoy this new design series!
