Lauren's Looks for Less - Emmy Rossum

Isn't she adorable? And don't even get me started on that amazing statement necklace...

We are excited to share with you a new monthly series on the blog - Lauren's Looks for Less. Why, who is Lauren you ask?

WELL, Lauren is the fabulous Lauren Regole of Lauren Goes Shopping. You may remember her as one of our Girl Crushes of the Week from last year. Lauren has been super busy with her job at Trunk Club but still wanted to share her fabulous attainable fashion advice. As such, we are thrilled to have Lauren as a monthly contributor on Tartan & Sequins. Take it away Lauren!

Hello lovely T&S readers! The beautiful Julia and Allison were kind enough to reach out to me for a new monthly feature - finding awesome outfits on a budget. I happen to be an avid shopper with a strict monthly budget and an intense reaction to deals and sales. Nothing gets me more excited than finding an amazing addition to my wardrobe on super the DVF 100% rabbit fur jacket I score for 50% off, with ANOTHER 30% off! I am still high on a hight from that one.

That being said, I'm honored to introduce Lauren's Looks for Less. Each month, I will take an inspirational photo of a celeb and hunt around online until I find a great version of the outfit for a fraction of the price. First up, it's everyone's favorite Shameless actress, Emmy Rossum.

I love her playful sweater paired with the leather mini - everyone needs a little (p)leather in their wardrobe. You can get everything listed below - the skirt, sweater, shoes and purse - for $200! And they're all great pieces to mix and match with all of the other fabulous things in your wardrobe.

Sweater with Elephant Flocking from ASOS - $48

Pleated Faux Leather Circle Skirt from F21 - $23

Quilted Faux-Leather Crossbody from Banana Republic - $60

Oyes Booties from Nine West - $70

Go get your bargain shopping on - thank you so much for reading!

Love, Lauren

Brown Sugar Lip Scrub Recipe

You guys, a scrub is also an amazing tool for exfoliation. Duh. via
So, here's something about me: I am not huge on exfoliating. I know, I know. Everybody is all about the Clairisonic, right? Well, I had one when I lived in Chicago many moons ago, and I got so excited about it that I used it twice a day and broke out. I tend to go bananas when I like something and obsessively overuse whatever that thing is. Either way I threw it away like it (not my obsessive use) was the problem and haven't thought much about exfoliation since.

Until. A few months ago, my friend Erin happened to give me a tube of the Nicki Minaj for MAC lipstick that she hadn't liked on herself, but she thought might work on me. Sidenote, isn't it fun when girls do that? Anyway, I was a whiter shade of pale when she gave me the lipstick, but after a few recent weekends at the beach, I was feeling sassy enough to give it a go. While it was a lovely color, it made me take a look in the mirror and say for the first time, "OMG this is why lip scrubs exist!" It was bad. I immediately googled at-home lip scrub recipes and modified a recipe to use ingredients I had around the house.

Well, once I had my new scrub made, I set about scrubbing my lips. Then the results were so great that I was like, they totally exfoliate during manicures sometimes, I'm gonna do my hands. Cut to Ben walking upstairs to find me with one of my feet in the sink of the bathroom off the kitchen, giving myself some kind of impromptu hillbilly pre-pedicure scrub. "This isn't a ladies' day spa" he said quietly as he walked away. "Get back here and feel this foot!" I screamed, "I made the best exfoliating scrub in the world and it didn't cost you a red cent!" Intrigued by the prospect of my interest in "free" beauty treatments, he came back and agreed that, yeah, my foot was pretty soft.

I digress. The point is that this scrub is great for whatevs, but I'm calling it a lip scrub because that's its origin story. Or whatever. And now I'll get to the point and tell you how to make the scrub already.

You'll just need three ingredients: brown sugar, honey, and coconut oil. My brown sugar and coconut oil are just your standard Trader Joe's brand, while my honey is super fancy (it's one of Oprah's favorite things...the definition of "it's like whatever"), and was given to me for Christmas by a fabulous foodie I work with named Susie.

Start with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Make sure the coconut oil is room temp, because if it's liquid or super cold and solid things are going to get pretty awkward here and I'm not sure what to tell you. Mash the brown sugar and semi-solid coconut oil up either with a spoon, or let's be honest, with your damn hands.

Once the brown sugar and coconut oil are all mashed up, add a little bit of honey to make the scrub a nice smooth consistency. I think I added about 2 teaspoons, but honestly, I'm giving you creative to just live out loud here and add whatever amount you think is right.

Et voila! I put my scrub in a little jar that we usually reserve for Ben's infused liquors and made a label, because obviously. Pictured with the scrub is the lipstick that launched a thousand scrubs.

Favorite Oscar Looks

This photo really doesn't do Kerry Washington's Miu Miu gown justice.
Absolutely stunning.

The ladies really turned it out for this year's Oscars. I mean, I'm sure they do every year but maybe I just started really paying attention this year? The styles were all over the place but in looking at my favorites, the bright colors and the metallic dresses stood out most to me. Here are my favorite Oscar looks.

Go on with your bad self Naomi Watts.
This Armani Prive gown showed up Oscar himself.

While I wouldn't normally say I was a Halle Berry fan, I cannot argue with this amazing Versace dress.
Donatella, while I question your plastic surgery decisions, I do not question this design decision.

When I saw this Gucci gown on Jennifer Garner on the red carpet,
my jaw dropped. How amazing is this color?!

Sally Field looking like one badass b in her Valentino gown.

An honorable mention goes to this faboo lady as well:

Again, the photo doesn't do this Dior dress justice,
but Charlize Theron looked amazing.

Which ones were your favorites?! Xo J

Maxi Skirt Madness

I admit, I was slow to get into the maxi skirt trend. It wasn't that I didn't love a good maxi skirt, it's just that it's rarely warm enough in SF to justify the purchase of one. However, when it is warm in SF, a maxi skirt is straight up the only thing I want to wear. Imagine my excitement when my brother got me this Splendid number for Christmas. Double that excitement when TC surprised me with a trip down to Newport Beach to visit Allison a couple of weeks ago. Was it the perfect time to take my new maxi for a spin? You bet your ass it was.

When I was packing for the trip, we weren't sure if we were going to be spending my birthday on a boat or out and about so I packed both sneakers and booties. We actually still didn't know when I was getting dressed, so I erred on the side of caution and wore my sneakers. I loaded on my Julie Vos baubles and threw on my leather jacket and called it a day. Check out my ensemble.

Girl Crush of the Week: Lindsey Hutter of Caviar Taste, Tuna Fish Wallet

Any girl who thinks Cara Delevingne (sister of Style Icon, Poppy) is A-OK in my book. Couple that with a love for mixing high and low fashion and a sassy named blog and we have this week's Girl Crush of the Week. Please join us in getting to know the fabulous Lindsey Hutter of Caviar Taste, Tuna Fish Wallet!
  • Style icon(s)? I have quite a few style icons. Audrey Hepburn, Jenna Lyons, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen, Miroslava Duma & Carrie Bradshaw.
  • Favorite book? My all time favorite book is The Great Gatsby. I can read it again & again.
  • Favorite perfume? Hands down, Victor & Rolf Flowerbomb. I have been wearing it since it was released. I swear, I get high off the sent. It's completely intoxicating.

  • Style philosophy? A wise man who goes by the name of Alexander McQueen once said -  "I think the idea of mixing luxury and mass-market fashion is very modern - wearing head-to-toe designer has become a bit passe. It's a new era in fashion - there are no rules. It's all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together." These, my friends, are style words to live by!

  • Best "hidden gem" store?  I am a sucker for all NYC markets. Those to me a "gems." My current favorites are: Artists & Fleas, Young Designer Market, Brooklyn Flea, & Hester Street Fair.
  • Must-have beauty product? I am a total beauty junky. My current product obsession is YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat Foundation. I've never had so many compliment on my skin before using this. It gives you the most incredible glow. It's like having a "pregnancy glow" without the pregnancy.

  • Favorite song? My all time favorite song is "Dreaming Tree" by Dave Matthews Band. Fun fact: I walked down the aisle to this song on my wedding day.
  • Secret addiction? Pink Starbursts (I am literally eating one right now as I write this), puppies in sweaters & cheese. I love cheese!

  • Motto/Quote to live by? "Wherever you go, there you are."  - Think about it!
  • Favorite drink? When I go to a bar I typically order a Ketel One, club soda with a splash of pineapple juice. BUT lately I have been on a major cucumber binge. If there is ever a drink on a cocktail menu with cucumber infused vodka or muddled cucumber, I kick my "usual" to the curb.

  • My bracelet stack isn't complete without... A gold chunky bracelet that my mom received for her 40th birthday from all of her friends. It's timeless & has a lot of sentimental value. The perfect addition to any bracelet stack.
  • I get my sweat on by... Shopping! If shopping were an Olympic sport I would have multiple gold medals! No, but really.. I get "mall sweats."  This of it as hot flashes, without menopause. My endorphins kick into high gear the second I step into a mall/store. I just get way too excited.

Thanks for allowing us to feature you Lindsey! Happy Friday everyone!

Going Glam for Valentine's Day

In honor of Valentine's Day, I thought I'd class things up a bit today. I hope everyone has a fabulous day filled with love and chocolates :)

You know me, I don't really get super glammed up that often. I used to get glammed up every weekend when I lived in LA but since moving to SF things have slowed down a little. I mean, remember when I dedicated an entire post to the one time I wore a dress?!

When my fiance and I scheduled a nice little date night last weekend, I took the opportunity to go glam. I curled my hair, had my make-up done (I wish I could take credit for it), threw on a skirt and some serious baubles and out we went. I felt great and we had a wonderful time. It made me wonder, should I do this more often? Do you all still get super glammed up for fun nights out? Are you all getting glammed up tonight for Valentine's Day? If so, what are some of your tricks for feelin' like a million bucks?

Zara Shirt (similar), Fur Vest (similar), Dolce and Gabanna Skirt, GiGi New York Bag (c/o),
Target Necklace, Kiel James Patrick (c/o), Spike the Punch, AV Max and Hermes Bracelets, Adriana Orsini Earrings

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!

Girl Crush of the Week: Staci Acquasanta of Leather and Leops

There was something about Staci Acquasanta that I just liked. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Was it her classic style with an edge? Was it her fabulous collection of sunglasses. Was it her ability to make my jaw drop at the sight of her wedding photos? While all of these things are very true, I discovered the real reason when I went to add Staci as a friend on FB. It turned out that she, like Allison and me, was a Miami girl! And was even in Allison's sorority. Talk about a wonderful surprise!

Staci is the force behind the amazing fashion blog, Leather and Leops. As a fan of both materials, our love of her blog seemed like a natural fit. Please join us in getting to know the lovely Staci Acquasanta!

  • Style icon(s)? My style icons are Diane Kruger, Kate Hudson, Sienna Miller, Rachel Bilson, Jessica Alba. I could list a lot more but these days these are the women that inspire my everyday fashion.
  • Favorite book? I wouldn't say I have one favorite book. I used to read a lot and unfortunately don’t do as much reading as I wish I could. Some of the books I’ve really enjoyed are The Beach House, The Castaways, Something Borrowed and Everyone Worth Knowing.
  • Favorite perfume? Chance by Chanel
  • Interior Design philosophy? Sleek, Sophisticated, Modern and a personal touch that makes your apartment/ house your own.
  • Best "hidden gem" store? BigDropNYC- if I am ever on the lookout for the perfect outfit there is no doubt that I will find one here.
  • Must-have beauty product? Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Lotion and all things Bobbi Brown
  • Favorite song? Rosalita- Bruce Springsteen
  • Secret addiction? Reading gossip magazines (I have a preference of order I read them in also)
  • Motto/Quote to live by? Change your life. My husband says this and I now totally agree that if you want something to change, you have to take the action. No one can change your life but yourself.
  • Favorite drink? Riesling
  • My bracelet stack isn't complete without... My Cartier Love Bracelet, hasn't left my arm for 5 years except for my wedding day
  • I get my sweat on by...  Soul Cycle

Isn't Staci the coolest?! If you agree, check her out on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest!

Happy Friday loves!! Xo J

ThomasKelly Workout Tank Giveaway

Just like everyone else in the country, Allison and I are trying to start 2013 off right. And by "right," I mean like... healthy. I do have my wedding this year so it's time to get serious. As such I have been stepping up my workout routine by hitting up Pilates 2x a week and the gym 2-3x a week for some cardio and death by TRX. Seriously has anyone tried TRX? GOOD GOD!

Now, since I only had the workout wardrobe of someone who frequented the gym less than regularly, I needed some more options. Specifically CUTE options that would get me excited to go to the gym. Enter ThomasKelly. Their motto? To take preppy from exercise to errands. Hello match made in heaven for a Marina girl like myself.

ThomasKelly was founded by, who else, Thomas and Kelly Gamble, in 2012. Prior to starting the ThomasKelly, the couple worked in commercial real estate in Los Angeles. In 2008, Thomas and Kelly decided they wanted to start a company and, while they originally thought they may want to create and sell ties (a la Vineyard Vines), Kelly had a stroke of genius while at spin class. Why not make preppy activewear? And with that ThomasKelly was born. Maybe I should go to more spin classes. Wellllll....

Kelly was kind enough to send me the Malaga Mix tank to cure my workout wardrobe blues and let me tell you- it worked! The tank is equal parts adorable, comfortable and flattering. I mean, isn't one of the biggest concerns with workout wear making sure your lumps and bumps you are trying to get rid of are hidden? Well let me tell you, the adorable navy gingham pattern and thick fabric do just that. Here's my shot in the tank to prove it.

Now here is the really exciting part. Thomas and Kelly have kindly offered to give away a ThomasKelly Malaga Mix tank to one of the Tartan & Sequins readers!! Use the widget below to enter to win. The giveaway will close on 2/18 and a winner will be announced on 2/19. Good luck!

Girl Crush of the Week: Lauren Brousell

I am not sure exactly when we here at Tartan & Sequins started noticing the adorable Lauren Brousell of the blog Pretty Pieces. Could it have been when she wrote this post on plaid aka TARTAN? Or could it have been when she wrote this post on Monogram Madness? We aren't sure really, but we are sure of is that she's adorable, has a great sense of style and seems like a genuinely sweet girl. Get to know Miss Lauren better in this today's Girl Crush of the Week!
  • Style icon(s)? My style icons are Kate Middleton, Blake Lively, Olivia Palermo and Jennifer Aniston. Any of them can wear a little black dress with simple accessories and look amazing. That’s true style.
  • Favorite book? That’s a tough one, I have so many favorites! My most recent favorite is Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I could not put it down, so many twists and turns! Some of my all time favorites are The Glass Castle, Eat Pray Love, and One Day. The books are ALWAYS better than the movies.

  • Favorite perfume? My all-time favorite is Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom and Honey, it’s one of the only perfumes I’ve found that actually stays on all day. I only using it sparingly though because it’s so expensive!
  • Interior Design philosophy? I like to mix and match things, I don’t believe things have to match to look good. I plan on discovering more of my interior design style when I move into my apartment this summer in Boston, and so far I’ve collected quite a few coffee table books and art for the walls.

  • Best "hidden gem" store? I love Moxie, it’s a small boutique in Wellesley and Boston and they always have a unique collection of designer items, like Tory Burch shoes and bags you don’t see in department stores.
  • Must-have beauty product? Anything from Benefit, especially the Dallas bronzer, I can’t go a day without using it! I also love Benefit’s They’re Real mascara.

  • Favorite song? At the moment, anything country is being played non-stop in my car and on my iPod. I love Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, The Band Perry and recently I’ve gotten into Little Big Town.
  • Secret addiction? Pretty Little Liars and Homeland, I’ve spent the majority of this winter watching both shows on Netflix!
  • Motto/Quote to live by? Follow your passion. I’ve found that this is a great rule to live by in terms of my career, my blog and my life in general. If you’re passionate about something, that’s when you’ll do your best work.

  • Favorite drink? Normally I go for Captain Morgan’s and Coke, but recently I discovered this drink called a beer-tail, which is made with pumpkin beer, sparkling cider, lemon and good!
  • My bracelet stack isn't complete without... My new David Yurman style silver bracelet that I just bought at Moxie a few weeks ago!
  • I get my sweat on by...  Lately I’ve been doing gentle yoga on the weekends to change up my gym routine. It’s so relaxing and good to stretch out your back after sitting in a cubicle all week.

Think Lauren is as adorable as we do? Follow her via one of the following social media channels.
